What you can protect yourself against

Insurance of persons covers what happens to your income and your family when your health gives way. Three types of coverage handle the essentials. Others come in depending on your situation, particularly if you work for yourself or run a business.

Coverage 1

Life insurance

A tax-free lump sum paid to the people you name when you die. This is the money that lets your family stay in the house, finish paying the mortgage, or simply get through the next two years without worrying about the bills.

Who it is for. Anyone who has someone financially dependent on them, whether a partner, children, parents, or a business partner.

The four main families.

  • Term, available on terms from 10 to 40 years. Lower premium, coverage for a set period. A good fit for a mortgage, or for the years when children are dependent. Some plans are issued without a medical exam, subject to eligibility.
  • Whole life, the classic permanent policy. Fixed premium, coverage guaranteed for life, and a value that builds on a schedule known in advance.
  • Participating, a whole life policy that shares in the insurer's results through policyholder dividends. They are never guaranteed, but over time they can increase the contract's value or reduce the premium.
  • Universal, a permanent policy that separates the cost of insurance from a savings component you fund at your own pace. More flexibility, in exchange for closer monitoring.

The question to ask yourself

"If I died this month, how much money would have to land in my family's account for their financial life to stay unchanged?"

That figure, minus what you already have, is your real need. We work it out together in one meeting.

The quick calculation

Add up your fixed monthly costs, meaning housing, groceries, transport, utilities and loan payments.

If your income dropped to zero for eight months, how long would your savings hold? Most people answer "not as long as I thought."

Coverage 2

Disability insurance

It replaces part of your income if illness or injury stops you working. It is the most overlooked coverage, even though statistically a prolonged disability is more likely than death before 65.

Who it is for. First and foremost the self-employed, business owners and anyone without a group plan. But salaried employees too, because group plans often cap replacement at 60 to 70% of salary and end the day you leave the job.

What we look at together. The waiting period (how long before benefits start), how long benefits last, and above all the definition of disability written into the contract, and that is what decides whether you are covered when the day comes.

Coverage 3

Critical illness insurance

A tax-free lump sum paid on diagnosis of a covered illness, typically cancer, heart attack and stroke, and often a good deal more depending on the contract. The money goes to you, and you do what you want with it.

This is what allows someone to take six months of unpaid leave to recover, pay for a treatment not covered by RAMQ, adapt the house, or fly in a relative to help.

There are also policies designed for children, including for diagnoses specific to early childhood. They are taken out young, at a low premium, and often follow the child into adulthood.

Important. Every contract defines precisely which illnesses are covered, the survival period required after diagnosis, and the exclusions. These details change everything. we read them together before you sign anything.

Often misunderstood

This is not medical insurance, it does not pay for your care. It is income and freedom insurance. It buys time while you focus on something other than your budget.

Add-ons

What comes in depending on your situation

Four coverages that attach to an existing contract or stand on their own, depending on what you already hold.

Loan and mortgage

Often more flexible and more portable than the coverage offered by the lender. It can repay the balance at death, but also take over the payments during a disability.

Children's life

Guaranteed insurability for later, at a fixed premium. You take it out early precisely because nobody knows what an adult's health will look like.

Accident

A lump sum paid after a serious injury, a fracture or an accidental death. Modest premium, often taken out for the whole family at once.

Travel

Medical emergencies outside Quebec, cancellation, baggage. Some travel coverage can also be added to a contract you already hold.

Self-employed or in business

When your income depends on you alone

An employee who falls ill usually has a group plan behind them. A self-employed worker has nothing, and a shareholder also carries commitments that keep running during the absence.

Protecting your income

With no group plan and no paid leave, a disability cuts the entire paycheque. That is the first thing we look at together.

Covering the fixed costs

Rent, salaries and bills keep coming while you are off. Overhead expense coverage carries them until you are back.

Funding a shareholders' agreement

If a partner dies, the agreement often calls for their shares to be bought out. Life insurance provides the cash on the day it is needed.

Protecting a business loan

Commercial debt does not vanish at death or during a disability, and it rarely transfers on good terms.

Auto and home

Your car and your house sit under another licence

Auto and home insurance falls under damage insurance, a discipline separate from mine. I do not sell it and I cannot advise you on it. Doing so would mean practising without the certificate that allows it.

What I can do is take down the information needed and have a quote prepared by someone certified in damage insurance. They do the analysis, the advice and the contract. You do not have to start the file over on your side.

It works the other way too. When someone reviews their auto and home coverage, it is often the right moment to check whether the rest still holds up. A move, a first house or a new car rarely changes just one policy.

What the quote covers

Vehicles

  • Cars
  • Motorcycles and snowmobiles
  • Recreational vehicles

Property

  • Homeowners and condo owners
  • Building owners
  • Tenants

Frequently asked

What people ask me most

How much does life insurance cost?

There is no honest answer without knowing your situation. The premium depends on your age, smoking status, the amount, the term and your health. Two people the same age can pay three times apart. A 30-minute meeting gives you a real figure rather than an average that fits nobody.

Is my group insurance at work enough?

Usually only in part. Group plans typically cover one to two times salary at death, which rarely stretches far with a mortgage and children. And crucially, the coverage ends when you leave the job, often at the worst possible moment. We read your group booklet together before discussing anything else.

Do I need a medical exam?

Not necessarily. For many contracts a health questionnaire is enough. For larger amounts the insurer may request a blood test or paramedical exam, at their expense, at home or at the office, in about twenty minutes.

I have a health condition. Am I insurable?

Very often, yes. Diabetes, anxiety, high blood pressure, family history, these are common situations that are placed regularly, sometimes with an extra premium or a specific exclusion. Each insurer assesses differently, and that is precisely where an advisor earns their keep.

Are your services chargeable?

No. The needs analysis, the written summary and the recommendations are free and carry no obligation. If you take out coverage, the insurer compensates me. If you don't go ahead, you owe me nothing and you keep the summary.

Can I cancel if I change my mind?

Yes. A rescission period applies after signing. You can cancel and be fully refunded. The exact terms are in your contract and I walk you through them at signing, not afterwards.

Please note. The descriptions above are summaries for information purposes. The coverage, definitions, exclusions, waiting periods and limitations that actually apply are those of the insurance contract issued by the insurer, which prevails at all times. Every application remains subject to the insurer's approval.

Shall we look at your situation?
